How full, emptiness!

How full, emptiness! An old master: 'Turn your heart round and enter the origin. When the heart stirs, various things arise. When the heart becomes completely empty, various things also become empty.' How full, emptiness: the empty heart is not blank—it's full of everything. When the heart is neither driven by good nor bad, all things are just as they are. Detachment from everything—Rinzai's complete taking away of man and situation.

Dissolved, just like ice

Dissolved, just like ice. Dogen: True aspirants are few. The master's sermon is already finished before they give ear. Time flies faster than an arrow; life is more transient than a dewdrop. Those lacking the bodhi-mind must not stay. Dissolved, just like ice: the disciple dissolves into the master like ice into water. The separation was never real.

Unhitch the Universe

Unhitch the Universe. Rinzai: 'Students fail because of lack of faith in themselves. Only do the ordinary things: relieve your bowels, pass water, wear clothes, eat, lie down when tired. In your red heart there is a true man of no fixed position.' Unhitch the universe: stop pulling the load of the ego. Do the ordinary with awareness—then the extraordinary happens on its own.

This harvest moon

This harvest moon. Dogen: How fortunate to encounter the true dharma! Express gratitude through daily practice. In their realm there is no gap between body and mind—every word is their warm body and mind. This harvest moon: the full moon of enlightenment is already shining. Gratitude is not words but living practice. The master's words are his living body.

You must see for yourself

You must see for yourself. Dogen: Successive patriarchs personally transmitted the dharma. Like small rivers joining a great one, like keeping light from going out. You must see for yourself: transmission is not a certificate—it's an existential seeing. The eye and face of the Buddha have been incessantly transmitted. Open your eyes and present them with themselves.

Cages of gold

Cages of gold. Seigen: 'Two diseases: riding an ass to search for the ass, and riding an ass unwilling to dismount. You yourself are the ass—mountains, rivers and plains are all the ass. Don't ride. The universe becomes one wide expanse.' Cages of gold: even golden cages are cages. The first disease is seeking what you already are; the second is clinging to the finding.

The mysterious one

The mysterious one. Rinzai: 'The one listening to my expounding has neither form nor shape, no place of abode. If you search for Him, He flees. He is called the mysterious one. Love drowns you in water, anger burns you in fire, doubt obstructs you with earth, joy whirls you away with wind.' The mysterious one: your consciousness—it's right here and can't be found.

Joy in the morning

Joy in the morning. Yun-men: 'My duty compels me to attempt the impossible. Even telling you to look directly is already burying the real thing under verbiage. If you have found your true self, you can pass through fire without being burned, speak all day without moving your lips.' Joy in the morning: enlightenment is not solemn—it's the morning joy of existence. The talk is decoration on the door—experience is the house.

The simple task of turning in

The simple task of turning in. Ejaku: 'Turn the light inwards. Don't try to memorize my words. Sekito's is a gold shop; mine is a general store. Don't desire the three gifts of vision or the six supernatural powers—these are accidentals.' The simple task of turning in: not seeking powers, not seeking holiness—just turning the light inward. The essence is simple; the mind makes it complex.

Sun and moon in one's sleeve. Eno: 'Meditation and wisdom are a unity, not two things. Meditation is the substance of wisdom; wisdom is the function of meditation. Like the lamp and the light—if there is a lamp there is light.' Sun and moon in one's sleeve: the enlightened one carries the cosmos within. Meditation and wisdom are not sequential—they are simultaneous. The lamp and the light: two names, one substance.
